“Bulletproof Coffee” Raw Elements Style.

At this point there aren’t too many people who haven’t heard about the “bulletproof coffee” movement. If you haven’t, it sounds… weird. The idea comes on the heels of the high fat low carb diet that is still scoffed at in the mainstream diet communities. The notion of knowingly ingesting 1-2 tablespoons of butter in your morning coffee is almost unthinkable to some, and to be honest sounds kinda gross to most.

At Raw elements, were huge supporters of the high fat movement, as we know the benefit to high fat supplements such as coconut oil, chia seed oil and ice-pressed olive oil. We all use and love these products because they make us feel amazing, so why not try it in our coffee?

We decided to try it, and documented some of the more noticeable effects. While we followed the basic guidelines, we did tweak a few things. Keep in mind, we don’t think there was anything wrong with the original “bulletproof” coffee, but we wanted to optimize every ingredient to get the most out of it, based on the products we know and love.

The first thing we substituted was the coffee. Now, regular coffee is fine, but we decided to try it with our Four Sigmatic Mushroom Coffee with Lions Mane and Chaga. Lions mane helps clear out the morning brainfog and keep it at bay throughout the day, while Chaga keeps the immune system strong. It comes in an instant coffee sachet which makes the whole process super easy at 5am, pre-coffee when you’re barely aware of your own existence.

The next ingredient is optional, but if you need a little sweetness in your coffee we would recommend Lakanto. Its an all natural sweetener derived from Monk fruit, can be used one-to-one with sugar or other sweeteners, has zero calories, and has one of the lowest detectable glycemic responses in the body (which makes it safe for people who are sugar sensitive).

The last ingredient is the fat. The original recipe recommends organic, unsalted butter (don’t try it with salted butter, its really awful, we tried). The unsalted butter definitely tastes the best, but you can get a similar flavor with Ghee, or coconut oil if you have a lactose sensitivity or you don’t do dairy. 1-2 tablespoons is the recommended amount, but you can start with a lower dose (1 teaspoon and work your way up) as most peoples systems are not accustomed to a shot of fat of that size in the morning right away.

Add all these ingredients to the blender, as well as one or two cups of boiling water (depending on how tired you are) and blend! Now, the contents in the blender will be HOT so make sure the top of the blender doesn’t blow off in the process. We ended up having to hold the lid down with a towel just to be sure.

THE CONCLUSION: Despite everything I had preconceived, it actually tasted amazing. Bonus, you can ditch the chap stick. While drinking this 3-5 days a week, I had the most beautifully conditioned lips I’ve ever had in my life.

At the time I was working a job that started at 7am, so I was up and out of the house by 6:30. It barely took any time out of my schedule to make it in the morning and after a while you start to crave it as soon as you wake up. As soon as I started drinking it I immediately felt more alert and grounded. Not to mention, I ended up losing 40 pounds in 4 months simply due to the fact that fat is a powerful appetite suppressant. I would have my breakfast at 6:30 in the morning and I wouldn’t even think about lunch until around 1pm. It really stabilized my cravings.

Overall, if you’re someone who has a hard time getting breakfast in the morning and are looking for something a little different? This one is definitely worth a shot.
