Bone Broth Breakdown: Why this Ancient Healing Elixir is so Popular Today
Bone broth is a hot topic these days. Scores of people are turning to Paleo or Ketogenic healing diets and consuming bone broth whenever they get the chance. Even celebrities are sipping on this vitamin and mineral rich elixir. It’s become a “pregame staple” for Kobe Bryant who relies on it for recovery and performance. Gwyneth Paltrow, Salma Hayek and Shailene Woodley are fans – the latter is even quoted as saying “bone broth is everything” in an interview with MTV.
Why do people love bone broth so much? One major reason is that it has been touted as a healing food for hundreds of years. Although its mainstream popularity in North America has skyrocketed over the last few years, bone broth has been used as a natural healing remedy in Chinese medicine for more than 2,500 years! It has even been said that Hippocrates – the father of medicine – recommended it to people with digestion issues in ancient Greek times.
Bone broth contains an array healing nutrients, including gelatin and glycine. These nutrients work to repair tissues, primarily focusing on the gut – contributing to bone broth reputation as an effective and natural whole-food remedy to leaky gut. It has also been praised for its anti-aging capabilities, removing wrinkles each time you eat it, thanks to the collagen, iodine and anti-aging minerals (calcium, phosphorous and magnesium) it provides.* This liquid gold also supports immune system function and aids the metabolism, among many other perks.**
While I believe in bone broth and have used it myself many times, there is one problem becoming prevalent today: larger companies are jumping on the bandwagon and starting to mass produce this traditional recipe. Unfortunately, many of these bone broth products (e.g., bone broth protein) use bones that may be from China. And not organic. This scares me.
Bone broth is healing. In my opinion, it’s a case of “buyer beware”. If you are making bone broth in your own kitchen and you know where the bones you’re using came from, and how the animal was raised, then good for you. If the bones come from an organic or bio-dynamic farm, even better. If it comes from a small farm in your area and it is bought frozen, still good. Finding the highest quality ingredients and formulations – that you can actually feel confident about – is critical when it comes to bone broth. This can be a time-consuming pursuit resulting in people settling for nutritionally-degraded or lesser-quality store bought varieties or skipping out on bone broth altogether.
Given all of the fantastic qualities of bone broth that I’ve covered so far, and the challenges in sourcing ingredients to make your own, I am SO EXCITED to introduce you to Healthforce Vitamineral Earth – a VEGAN Bone Broth! Jameth Sheridan had developed Earth as a grounding, healing and cleansing elixir many years ago. It can be taken like a tea each day in the afternoon. While raw is great, this formulation does better the longer it is boiled. This releases all the phytonutrients in the formula, making it better. If you work like me – you can make a cup each afternoon or evening using 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon in your favourite mug with boiled water.
You can also enjoy Vitamineral Earth as a broth with this recipe by our friends at Healthforce:
